Volcano Types and Structure Lesson
Learning Objective: Pupils can describe the structure of a volcano and explain how eruptions happen
About this resource
This comprehensive KS2 lesson plan for Year 4 Geography provides an engaging way to introduce pupils to the fascinating world of volcanoes. It guides teachers through explaining the structure of different volcano types and how eruptions occur, directly supporting the UK National Curriculum's focus on understanding physical geography and natural phenomena.
Starter
10 minutesShow a dramatic volcano eruption video. Ask: 'What is happening? What comes out of a volcano? Why do volcanoes erupt?' Pupils write initial ideas on mini whiteboards.
Main Activity
30 minutesPart 1: Inside a Volcano Teach the structure using a cross-section diagram:
- Magma chamber (underground reservoir of molten rock)
- Main vent (central pipe)
- Crater (opening at the top)
- Lava (magma that reaches the surface)
- Ash cloud (fine particles blown into the air)
- Secondary vents (side openings)
Part 2: Types of Volcano
- Shield volcano: gentle slopes, runny lava, less explosive (e.g., Mauna Loa)
- Composite/stratovolcano: steep sides, explosive, layers of lava and ash (e.g., Mount Vesuvius)
- Cinder cone: small, steep, made of volcanic fragments
Part 3: Draw and Label Draw a cross-section of a composite volcano. Label all parts. Write a paragraph explaining how an eruption happens.
Plenary
10 minutesQuick quiz: 'Am I a shield volcano or a composite volcano?' Teacher reads descriptions, pupils vote. Discuss: 'Would you rather live near a shield volcano or a composite volcano? Why?'
Differentiation
SEN Support
Pre-drawn volcano outline to label. Word bank with definitions. Simplified paragraph frame.
EAL Support
Visual cross-section with bilingual labels. Key vocabulary: magma, lava, erupt, crater. Paired labelling.
Gifted & Talented
Research the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD. Write a news report from Pompeii. Compare volcanic activity on Earth to other planets.
