How Volcanoes Erupt Lesson Plan
Learning Objective: Pupils can explain how volcanoes form and why they erupt
About this resource
This comprehensive lesson plan provides everything you need to teach Year 4 pupils about the fascinating world of volcanoes. Designed for geography lessons, it clearly explains how volcanoes form and why they erupt, aligning perfectly with the KS2 National Curriculum's focus on physical geography and understanding natural phenomena. You'll find engaging activities and clear explanations to help your students achieve the learning objective of explaining volcanic processes.
Starter Activity
10 minutesShow dramatic footage of a volcanic eruption. Ask: 'What questions do you have about volcanoes?' Collect questions on the board. Introduce today's focus: How and why do volcanoes erupt?
Main Activity
30 minutesPart 1: Inside the Earth Using a diagram, explain the layers of the Earth: crust, mantle, outer core, inner core. Explain that the crust is made of tectonic plates that move.
Part 2: Volcano Formation Demonstrate using a model: when tectonic plates move apart or collide, magma rises through cracks. When it reaches the surface, it becomes lava — this is an eruption.
Part 3: Build a Volcano Pupils build a model volcano using papier-mâché or clay, then simulate an eruption using bicarbonate of soda and vinegar.
Plenary
10 minutesPupils label a cross-section diagram of a volcano (magma chamber, vent, crater, lava flow). Quick quiz on key vocabulary. Exit ticket: Explain in 3 sentences how a volcano erupts.
Differentiation
SEN Support
Pre-labelled diagram to complete. Simplified explanation with visual steps. Adult support during model building.
EAL Support
Visual vocabulary cards: magma, lava, eruption, tectonic plates, crater. Sentence frames for exit ticket.
Gifted & Talented
Research the difference between shield and composite volcanoes. Investigate a real volcanic eruption (e.g. Vesuvius, Krakatoa) and present findings.
