Skeleton and Muscles Lesson Plan
Learning Objective: Pupils can identify the main bones of the skeleton and explain how muscles work with bones to create movement
About this resource
This comprehensive KS2 science lesson plan for Year 3 focuses on the human skeleton and muscles, providing engaging activities and clear explanations to help pupils identify key bones and understand how muscles facilitate movement. Teachers can use this resource to deliver an interactive and informative lesson that directly supports the National Curriculum objectives for understanding the human body. It offers a structured approach to teaching this vital biological concept, ensuring all learning objectives are met.
Starter Activity
10 minutesPlay 'Simon Says' with body part movements. Then ask: 'What's inside your body that lets you move?' Introduce the skeleton and muscles. Challenge: How many bones do you think are in the human body? (Answer: 206)
Main Activity
30 minutesPart 1: The Skeleton Using a life-size skeleton poster, teach the main bones: skull, ribs, spine, pelvis, femur, tibia, humerus, radius. Discuss the three functions: support, protection, movement.
Part 2: Bone Detectives Pupils feel their own bones (skull, ribs, kneecap, spine) and mark them on a body outline.
Part 3: Muscles and Movement Demonstrate how biceps and triceps work as a pair (antagonistic muscles). Pupils use cardboard arm models with split pins and elastic bands to show how muscles pull bones.
Plenary
10 minutesLabel a skeleton diagram (10 bones). Quick quiz: 'Which bone protects your brain? Your heart? What happens if you didn't have a skeleton?' Exit ticket: Explain how muscles and bones work together to bend your arm.
Differentiation
SEN Support
Pre-labelled skeleton with bones to match. Simplified arm model with step-by-step instructions. Word bank.
EAL Support
Visual bone cards with labels. Sentence frames for explanations. Physical demonstration of movements.
Gifted & Talented
Research a specific bone or muscle condition (e.g. broken bone healing, muscular dystrophy). Compare human skeleton to another animal's skeleton.
Key Vocabulary
Assessment Criteria
- Can name at least 8 bones
- Can explain the 3 functions of the skeleton
