Human Body Wordsearch Challenge (Year 3 Science)
Learning Objective: To recognise and identify key vocabulary related to the human body, reinforcing understanding of its main parts and functions.
About this resource
This engaging wordsearch challenge is designed for Year 3 pupils to reinforce their understanding of the human body. It helps children recognise and identify key vocabulary related to its main parts and functions, directly supporting the KS2 Science curriculum's objectives on animals, including humans. This resource offers a fun and interactive way to consolidate learning in the classroom.

Find these words
Words to Find
5-10 minutesFind the following words hidden in the puzzle. Words can be horizontal, vertical, or diagonal.
Wordsearch Activity for Pupils
15-20 minutesHello everyone! Today, we're going on a word hunt to discover some amazing words about our bodies. Look carefully for each word from the list below in the puzzle grid. When you find a word, circle it with your pencil. Remember, words can be hidden forwards, backwards, up, down, or even diagonally! Good luck, super scientists!
Teacher Instructions for Use
5 minutes preparationThis wordsearch is designed for Year 3 pupils studying the 'Human Body' topic in Science, aligning with the UK National Curriculum (Year 3: 'Animals, including humans' - identify that animals, including humans, need the right types and amount of nutrition, and that they cannot make their own food; they get nutrition from what they eat). It serves as an excellent starter activity to engage pupils, a plenary to consolidate vocabulary, or a quick independent task.
Before the activity:
- Print a copy of the wordsearch and the word list for each pupil.
- Briefly review the topic of the human body, perhaps by pointing to different parts or asking pupils to name some organs they know.
- Introduce the wordsearch, explaining how to find words (horizontal, vertical, diagonal).
During the activity:
- Encourage pupils to work independently, but allow for peer support if appropriate.
- Circulate to offer help and prompt pupils to sound out words if they are struggling.
After the activity:
- Go through the answers as a class, perhaps by having pupils come up to the board to highlight words.
- Transition into the extension activity to deepen learning.
Extension Activity: Define and Describe
10-15 minutesOnce you have found all the words in the puzzle, choose five of your favourite words from the list. On the back of your sheet or in your science book, write a short sentence or two explaining what each word means or how it relates to the human body. For example, if you chose 'brain', you might write: 'The brain is in our head and helps us think and control our body.'
Differentiation
SEN Support
Provide a pre-highlighted copy of the word list to help pupils identify the words more easily. Pair pupils with a supportive partner. For some, focus on finding just 5-7 words. Offer a visual aid (e.g., a labelled diagram of the human body) alongside the wordsearch.
EAL Support
Pre-teach the vocabulary words with visual flashcards or realia. Encourage pupils to use a bilingual dictionary if available. Allow them to work with a partner who can support their understanding of the English terms. The extension activity can be simplified to drawing a picture for each word.
Gifted & Talented
Challenge pupils to find the words without the provided word list (if the wordsearch generator allows for this). For the extension, ask them to research and write a short paragraph about the function of two or three of the body parts, or to label a blank diagram of the human body using the words they found.
Key Vocabulary
Assessment Criteria
- Pupils can accurately locate and circle at least 10 of the human body vocabulary words.
- Pupils can articulate or write a simple definition/description for at least three of the chosen words.
- Pupils demonstrate an increased familiarity with key scientific vocabulary related to the human body.
