Ocean Zones Lesson Plan
Learning Objective: Pupils can describe the different zones of the ocean and the creatures that live in each
About this resource
This comprehensive lesson plan provides everything you need to teach Year 2 pupils about the fascinating different zones of the ocean and the unique creatures inhabiting each. Designed for science lessons, it offers engaging activities and clear explanations to help children meet the learning objective of describing these zones, directly supporting the UK National Curriculum's focus on living things and their habitats.
Starter
10 minutesShow a picture of the ocean surface. Ask: 'What lives in the sea?' Then show a picture of the deep ocean. Ask: 'What about down here? Is it the same?' Introduce the idea that the ocean has layers, like a cake.
Main Activity
30 minutesPart 1: Ocean Zones Teach 3 simplified zones:
- Sunlight Zone (top): bright, warm, most sea life (dolphins, fish, coral)
- Twilight Zone (middle): dim, cooler, jellyfish, squid
- Midnight Zone (deep): pitch black, freezing, strange creatures (anglerfish, giant squid)
Part 2: Create an Ocean Zones Display Fold A3 paper into 3 sections (light blue, dark blue, black). Draw and label creatures for each zone.
Part 3: Deep Sea Creature Design Design your own deep-sea creature. It must have adaptations for the midnight zone: makes its own light, big eyes or no eyes, can survive pressure.
Plenary
10 minutesPupils present their deep-sea creatures. Class votes on the most creative adaptation. Quick quiz: 'Which zone am I describing?'
Differentiation
SEN Support
Pre-drawn zone template. Creature stickers to place. Simplified creature design.
EAL Support
Visual zone diagram. Key vocabulary: zone, deep, shallow, creature. Paired display work.
Gifted & Talented
Research bioluminescence and explain how deep-sea creatures make light. Compare ocean zones to rainforest layers.
