Starter Activity
10 minutesWrite 4 sentences on the board:
- The cat sat on the mat. (statement)
- Where is the cat? (question)
- What a beautiful cat! (exclamation)
- Sit down, cat. (command)
Ask: 'What's different about each sentence?' Introduce the 4 sentence types.
Main Activity
30 minutesPart 1: Sorting Give pairs 16 sentence cards. Sort them into 4 groups: statements, questions, exclamations, commands. Check with another pair.
Part 2: Punctuation Focus Teach the punctuation for each type: full stop (.), question mark (?), exclamation mark (!), full stop or exclamation mark for commands. Pupils add correct punctuation to unpunctuated sentences.
Part 3: Writing Pupils write 2 of each sentence type about a topic of their choice (e.g. their pet, a sport, a favourite book).
Plenary
10 minutesSentence type bingo: teacher reads sentences, pupils identify the type on their bingo card. Review: What punctuation does each type use? Exit ticket: Write one of each sentence type.
