A Note on Curriculum Alignment
N/AThis resource is designed to support the Year 3 (Key Stage 2) History curriculum, specifically focusing on the 'Britain's settlement by Anglo-Saxons' topic. While the user initially requested a 'science' focus, the Anglo-Saxons are primarily a history topic. This wordsearch will help pupils consolidate their understanding of key historical vocabulary. If a science link is desired, discussions could explore Anglo-Saxon understanding of materials, farming techniques, or early medical practices.

Activity for Pupils: Saxon Settlement Wordsearch

Teacher Instructions for Use
5 minutes prep, 20-30 minutes activityThis wordsearch is an excellent starter activity, plenary, or a short independent task to reinforce vocabulary during a unit on Anglo-Saxons. Print copies for each pupil. Encourage them to work individually or in pairs. Before starting, you might briefly review the words to ensure understanding, or use it as a pre-assessment to see what vocabulary they already recognise. After completion, go through the words as a class, discussing their meaning and relevance to the Anglo-Saxon period.
Extension Activity: Define and Describe
10-15 minutesOnce all the words have been found, challenge pupils to choose five of the words and write a short definition or a sentence explaining their importance to Anglo-Saxon life. For example, 'A longhouse was a typical Saxon home, often shared with animals.' This encourages deeper engagement with the vocabulary.
