Activity Overview
45 minutesPupils work in pairs to create an illustrated timeline of Roman Britain, from Julius Caesar's first invasion in 55 BC to the Roman departure in AD 410. This hands-on activity develops chronological understanding and historical knowledge.
Instructions
- Give each pair a long strip of paper and the event cards (pre-cut)
- Pupils read each event card and discuss where it belongs
- They arrange the cards in chronological order along the timeline
- Once checked by the teacher, pupils glue the cards and add illustrations
- Add a title and key dates to the timeline
Key Events to Include
- 55 BC: Julius Caesar's first invasion
- 54 BC: Caesar's second invasion
- AD 43: Claudius invades and conquers Britain
- AD 60-61: Boudicca's revolt
- AD 122: Hadrian's Wall construction begins
- AD 410: Romans leave Britain
