Minibeast Hunt and Identification Activity
Learning Objective: Pupils can identify and name common minibeasts found in the school grounds
About this resource
This engaging Minibeast Hunt and Identification Activity provides Year 1 science pupils with a hands-on opportunity to explore the school grounds and identify common minibeasts. Teachers can use this resource to facilitate outdoor learning, directly supporting the UK National Curriculum's emphasis on scientific enquiry and understanding living things in their natural habitats. It's a perfect way to bring science to life and encourage observation skills.
Activity Overview
45 minutesTake pupils on a minibeast hunt around the school grounds. They will search for, observe, and identify common minibeasts using identification charts, then record their findings.
Before You Go Outside
10 minutes- Discuss minibeast safety rules (look but don't touch, be gentle, return creatures to where you found them)
- Show the identification chart and practise naming minibeasts from pictures
- Demonstrate how to use a magnifying glass
- Give each pair a clipboard, recording sheet, and magnifying glass
The Hunt
25 minutesPupils search in these habitats:
- Under logs and stones
- In long grass
- On leaves and flowers
- Near walls and fences
- In soil
For each minibeast found, pupils:
- Identify it using the chart
- Tick it on their recording sheet
- Draw a quick sketch
- Note where they found it
Back in the Classroom
10 minutesPupils share their findings. Create a class tally chart of minibeasts found. Discuss: 'Which minibeast was most common? Why do you think that is? Where did we find the most minibeasts?'
Differentiation
SEN Support

EAL Support
Picture-based identification chart with names in English. Paired with English speaker. Visual recording sheet.
Gifted & Talented
Record additional observations (what the minibeast was doing, what it was eating). Create a bar chart of findings.
