Teacher Instructions for Use
5 minutes preparationThis wordsearch is designed for Year 4 pupils studying Ancient Egypt as part of the Key Stage 2 history curriculum. It serves as an excellent starter activity to introduce key vocabulary, a plenary to consolidate learning, or a fun homework task. Print out the wordsearch grid (which will be generated using the 'Words to Find') and this word list for each pupil. Encourage them to highlight or circle the words as they find them. Discuss the words afterwards to check understanding.
Extension Activity: Define and Describe
15-20 minutesOnce pupils have found all the words, ask them to choose five of their favourite words from the list and write a short definition or description for each. They could also draw a small picture to illustrate one of their chosen words. This encourages deeper engagement with the vocabulary and reinforces their understanding of Ancient Egyptian concepts.
Differentiation
SEN Support
Provide a word bank with definitions for pupils to match to the words they find. Allow them to work with a partner or in a small group. Pre-highlight the first letter of each word in the grid to guide them.
EAL Support
Pre-teach the vocabulary using visual aids (pictures of pharaohs, pyramids, etc.) before starting the activity. Pair EAL learners with a supportive peer. Provide a bilingual dictionary if appropriate.
Gifted & Talented
Challenge pupils to use all the words they find in a short paragraph or story about Ancient Egypt. They could also research one of the lesser-known words (e.g., 'scarab', 'papyrus') and present their findings to the class.
